The English thought they were weird - before a big fight, they spent hours washing themselves, combing their hair and braiding beards. Jewelry and utensils used by the Vikings have been found all over Europe. Many place names, especially in England, therefore come from the Scandinavian language. The Vikings have left much of an impression to this day. The Vikings are diligent farmers, skilled craftsmen, smart traders, brave fighters and above all fearless explorers. Over the weekend, they demonstrate the various weapons and clothing used and worn by the Vikings. The Vikings also do not like to sit still, they like to talk about daily life in the early Middle Ages. There are plenty of stalls selling everything from jewelry to clothes, soap to honey wine, weaponry to toys. ![]() The Viking week is the 23rd time this year! Visit the Vikings encampment and browse the market stalls. Using films, touch screens and hands-on replicas, a living picture is drawn of the Romans and the original inhabitants at the time. Display cases contain original acient Roman artefacts. On the ground floor, you enter Archeon's Roman Museum, where the Roman period in the Netherlands is brought to life interactively. At weekend here, AWN volunteers study and interpret all kinds of material that has been found. This part is certainly also worth a visit. On the same level is the studio of Archeologische Werkgemeenschap Nederland (AWN), Rijnstreek chapter. This ares holds a number of worktables, where young visitors can learn more about archaeology by engaging in the work. The inaugural event in 1951 was an effort to prove Austria’s cultural antecedents in the wake of World War II. For example, an entire grave from the bronze age has been contructed, accompanied by the telling of a sensational story. Vienna Festival Weeks ( Wiener Festwochen) The ultimate Austrian festival, Vienna Festival Weeks is a six-week-long cultural event that takes over the capital for five or six weeks in May and June. The significance of all the items is explained by a special presentation. On the upper lever is Archeologyhouse South Holland, which exhibits the kinds of object discovered in the ground, from all periods, distant prehistory to early modern. To give you an idea of the size of the market, the event includes spaces that are given over to ancestral trades and activities, in which visitors can spend a marvellous day learning to make babuchas (a type of slipper), or they can sign up for tournaments, taste Arab delicacies or watch a medieval combat that forms part of the recreation of a Christian encampment, in which there is also room for an exhibition of manuscripts and medieval siege machinery. ![]() The city's streets, avenues and squares are festooned with flags and pennants from days gone by, and are given up to the myriad demonstrations, representations, product tasting, concerts and shows that go to make up the Alicante Medieval celebration. To commemorate this deed, in early June the capital of the province of Alicante turns its historical city centre into an authentic medieval market.
